How are exchange fees structured?
Most exchanges use a maker/taker fee model. Maker fees apply when you add liquidity (place a limit order that doesn't execute immediately). Taker fees apply when you remove liquidity (place a market order that executes instantly). Taker fees are typically higher.
Many exchanges also offer volume-based fee tiers โ the more you trade in a 30-day period, the lower your rate. The rates in this calculator reflect the standard (beginner) tier unless otherwise stated.
Current fee comparison table

Understanding the real cost of trading
The stated fee percentage is only part of the cost. For a complete picture, also consider:
- Spread: The gap between the buy and sell price on some exchanges โ particularly on simple buy/sell interfaces โ can add 0.5โ2% to the effective cost.
- Withdrawal fees: Moving crypto off an exchange to your personal wallet incurs a withdrawal fee, either fixed or variable.
- Deposit fees: Some exchanges charge for card deposits (typically 1.5โ3.5%). Bank transfers are usually free.
- Currency conversion: If your local currency is not directly supported, an FX conversion fee may apply.
